Gillingham have added to their forward line with the signing of former Northampton Town striker Adebayo Akinfenwa.
The 28-year-old forward spearheaded the Cobblers' attack last season, scoring 17 goals in 40 appearances. After failing to land Aldershot striker Marvin Morgan, Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler has moved quickly to bring in the tall imposing target man.
Akinfenwa has signed a one-year contract at Priestfield and is likely to make his debut in tonight’s pre-season friendly against Scottish Premier League side Hearts.
The London-born striker began his career as an apprentice at Watford before moving to Lithuianian side FK Atlantas where he scored 33 times in 41 games. He moved back to the UK in 2002 where he had spells at Barry Town, Boston United, Leyton Orient, Doncaster, Torquay United, Millwall and Swansea.
He enjoyed two-and-a-half seasons at Northampton where he scored 37 goals in 88 appearances, but was unable to agree a deal at Sixfields for this season. He joins Gillingham as a free agent.
